Valitutti Solid 14K Gold Amethyst Peridot Diamond Suffragette Ring - Size 5

Michael Valitutti solid 14K white gold suffragette ring set with a Rose de France amethyst, two peridots, and a frame of diamonds. The center amethyst is a large oval in the pale pinkish lilac tone that defines the Rose de France grade, held in four prongs and sitting slightly proud of the mounting. A trillion cut peridot flanks it on each side, prong set with the points turned inward so the two triangles nest against the curve of the amethyst in vivid yellow green. Encircling all three is a continuous run of prong set round diamonds following a long pointed outline that tapers to a point at each end, so the entire head reads as one elongated navette shape rather than a round halo. The shank is wide and smoothly domed, rising from the finger into the head with no break, and the interior is stamped 14K NH.

Steeped in rich Edwardian history, this design pays tribute to the Suffragette movement. Green, white, and violet were adopted as the official colors of the Women's Social and Political Union in 1908, chosen by Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence, who gave each one a meaning: purple for the royal blood and dignity that runs in every suffragette, white for purity in public and private life, and green for hope and the emblem of spring. Women wore the three colors to declare their allegiance in public, and the jewelry trade answered immediately, with Mappin and Webb devoting part of their 1908 catalogue to suffragette pieces. Collectors have carried the colors forward ever since as the acronym Give Women Votes, and this ring is built to that reading stone by stone, color blocked in order with green peridot for Give, white diamonds for Women, and violet amethyst for Votes.

Michael Valitutti is a Graduate Gemologist whose Gems en Vogue collection is known for hand selected colored stones in distinctive settings. The overwhelming majority of that line was produced in palladium sterling silver with gold accents, which makes a solid 14K gold example like this one the exception rather than the rule, and NH is the hallmark collectors look for. Ring size 5. The domed shank carries real weight without a sharp edge anywhere on it, and it arrives packaged and ready to gift or add to your collection.

Fun Facts:
Association with the suffragette cause became fashionable enough by 1908 that Mappin and Webb, holders of royal warrants for jewellery since 1897, issued a catalogue of suffragette jewellery in the movement's colors.
Rose de France is the trade name for the palest lilac to pinkish grade of amethyst, and it inverts the usual grading logic for the stone, since amethyst is normally valued on depth of purple while this material is sought specifically for how little color it holds.
