Vintage Black Hills sterling silver ring with solid 12K gold grape leaf accents, made by the Coleman Company and marked C. Co. with the copyright symbol, STER and 12K. Two leaves sit at opposing corners of the face, one in green gold at the upper right and one in rose gold at the lower left, each struck with the deep veining and serrated edges the style is known for, the central rib running the full length with the side veins cut in at an angle. Between them a cluster of small silver grapes is applied in graduated rounds, tucked into the crook where the two leaves meet. The shank sweeps up on both sides and flattens into the mount so the whole design sits as a single diagonal across the finger.

The color work is the point here and it is worth understanding how it is achieved. Nothing on this ring is plated. Green gold is gold alloyed with silver and rose gold is gold alloyed with copper, so the color runs all the way through the metal and is a property of the alloy itself rather than a layer applied over it. That is why Black Hills leaves hold their distinction indefinitely. Against a sterling body the two golds read even more strongly than they would on a gold shank, because the white metal gives both warm tones something cool to push against, and the grape cluster in matching silver ties the two halves of the design back together.

Ring size 6. The design runs on the diagonal so it covers more of the finger than its footprint suggests while the shank stays slim at the back.

The grape leaf motif comes with a story the trade has told for well over a century. Legend holds that a French goldsmith named Henri LeBeau became lost and starving in the Black Hills, dreamed of a stream lined with grapevines, and woke to find the vines real. He is said to have made the first leaves in gratitude. It has never been documented, and it has been attached to the style for so long that the style is now unimaginable without it.
