Vintage Fabrikant Solid 10K Yellow Gold Heart Cut Ruby Diamond Mom Ring - Size 7

Vintage M. Fabrikant & Sons solid 10K yellow gold Mom ring with a heart cut ruby and diamond accents, marked 10KT with the Fabrikant stylized B maker's mark. The ring is built as an open heart, and the two halves of that heart are treated as opposites. The left sweep is finished in white gold and set with three small diamonds running along its curve. The right sweep is yellow gold, pierced with MOM in openwork script so the letters are formed by the metal that remains rather than engraved into it. The heart cut ruby sits at the junction where the two sides meet, prong set and raised above both, holding a deep red that carries a slight purple lean. The shank splits into two rails at the shoulders.

Setting the diamonds in white gold rather than yellow is the detail that makes the piece work. Colorless stones mounted in yellow metal pick up a warm cast from the gold beneath them and lose their neutrality, while a white backing keeps them reading cold and bright. Here it does double duty, because the white section also separates the diamonds from the yellow lettering on the other side so the two halves of the heart never compete. M. Fabrikant & Sons was selling loose diamonds in New York City in 1895 and was still family owned and operated one hundred and eleven years later. By the mid 2000s it had become one of the world's leading wholesalers of fine diamonds and jewelry, running roughly a billion dollars of business a year through twenty companies across ten countries including Israel, Belgium, India and Thailand, with Forbes listing it among the largest private companies in America in 2005. For roughly six hundred years, two of the most famous rubies in the world were not rubies. The Black Prince's Ruby set in the front of the British Imperial State Crown and the Timur Ruby in the Royal Collection are both red spinels, a separate mineral that occurs in the same deposits and the same color. Nobody could tell the difference until modern gemology arrived, and by then the stones had been fought over, traded between empires and set into crowns under the wrong name for centuries.
