Vintage UnoAErre 585 Solid 14K Yellow Gold Box Chain Italy Bracelet - 7.25 Inch

Vintage solid 14K yellow gold box chain bracelet by UnoAErre of Arezzo, marked 585 on the spring ring clasp, with ITALY and the UnoAErre cartouche stamped on the oval tag at the clasp end. The chain is a 1.3mm box link, built from square cubes that interlock face to face so the finished bracelet reads as one continuous squared cord rather than a series of visible loops. Each link presents a flat polished face on all four sides with crisp right angled edges running the full length, and the whole chain is polished bright. It closes with a spring ring.

The mark on this bracelet is the number one, and that is not a figure of speech. When Italy required every producer of precious metals to register an identifying hallmark, the maker's mark took the form of a star, a registration number and the two letter code of the province. The firm of Gori and Zucchi in Arezzo got to the registry before anyone else in their province and were assigned the number 1. They were proud enough of it to rename the entire company after the stamp. UnoAErre is nothing more than how an Italian reads 1 A R out loud, and for a hundred years the company has carried its own hallmark as its name. UnoAErre was founded on March 15, 1926 by Carlo Zucchi, a craftsman who had inherited a small goldsmith's shop, and Leopoldo Gori, a sales representative. The two of them brought industrial production methods into a trade that had been purely artisanal for centuries, which drove costs down far enough to put Italian gold chain into the world market. The company employed as many as fifteen hundred people by the 1960s and closed 2022 with a turnover of two hundred seventy six million euro.
Arezzo sits alongside Valenza and Vicenza as one of the three centers that made Italy the chain making capital of the world, and the reason Italian chain became the industry benchmark is competitive density. Hundreds of workshops packed into the same towns, all making the same products for the same buyers, drove refinement in a way no isolated manufacturer could match.
