The design is pure line work: two smooth curves that cross at the tail and open into a pointed almond shape, the whole symbol drawn in a single continuous sweep with no ornament anywhere on it.

That restraint is exactly why it works. The gold is rounded and softly domed along the outer edges, so light travels the length of each curve instead of breaking up across a textured surface, and the open center keeps it looking weightless.
