Solid 14K Yellow Gold Split Shank Solitaire Ring with Oval Opal Cabochon Showing Green and Blue Play of Color Size 5

Solid 14K Yellow Gold Ring with Oval Cut Opal Size 5

$235.00

Solid 14K yellow gold ring set with an oval opal cabochon showing strong green and blue play of color. The stone is a smooth low dome in a soft milky white body, and across that pale ground the color fires in scattered patches of vivid grass green and electric violet blue that shift and relocate as the hand turns. Four rounded gold prongs hold it at the compass points, set low and tight so almost nothing interrupts the face of the stone. The shank splits into two slim parallel bands as it rises toward the head, leaving a long open channel down each shoulder before the two rails rejoin behind the setting.

The setting is doing exactly what an opal this good needs. There is no halo, no accent stones, no engraving anywhere on the piece, because any of it would compete with the stone, and the split shank adds visual interest down the sides of the finger without putting a single element near the opal itself. Warm yellow gold is also the right call against a light body opal, since the gold pushes the cool greens and blues forward by contrast instead of blending into them the way white metal can. The open channel through the shoulders keeps the ring feeling light despite the size of the stone sitting on top of it.

Ring size 5. The prongs sit low and rounded with nothing sharp to catch, and the split shank is smooth and comfortable against the finger. Arrives packaged and ready to gift or add to your collection.

Fun Facts:
The play of color in opal went unexplained until 1964, when Australian scientists at the CSIRO put a sample under an electron microscope and found microscopic silica spheres stacked in an orderly grid, diffracting light the way a prism does, with the size of the spheres determining which colors appear and larger spheres being required for red, which is exactly why red fire is the rarest and most valuable.
Opal is the only major gemstone that is not a crystal at all but amorphous hydrated silica, and it holds real water inside its structure, typically between three and ten percent of its weight and occasionally as much as twenty.
